So is Acne a condition of Western Civilization?
Unfortunately Acne is a universal skin condition that affects 4 out of 5 people at some point in their life. In fact, many individuals will develop it at least once in their life.
In percentage terms:
(79 – 95)% of the adolescent population is sadly afflicted with this disorder.
(40-54)% of people over the age of 25 have some degree of facial acne for both men and women.
12% of women and 3% of men into their middle ages will still endure persist clinical facial acne

Brief Acne Terminology
Acne or Acne Vulgaris?
The medical term for common acne or 'acne' (as it is commonly known) is acne vulgaris. This skin disorder can be found on the face, neck, chest, back and upper arms.
Acne vulgaris is defined by areas of the skin with comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (pinheads), pustules (pimples), nodules (large papules), seborrhea (scaly red skin) and possibly leading to scarring of the affected area.
In order to be able to tackle acne head on it is vitally important to understand that it ranges from mild,moderate to severe.
Non-inflammatory Acne
This begins when oily secretions from the skin’s sebaceous glands block the tiny openings for hair follicles, hence blocked pores.
Blackheads
If large openings exist, the blockages take the form of blackheads. Small and flat spots with a darkened centre due to its air exposure. Blackheads are dark due to the presence of a dark pigment. This colour is not the result of dirt in the pores. Oil, dead skin cells and bacteria not trapped or blocked completely.
Whiteheads
If there are small openings, the blockages take the form of whiteheads. Closed small, flesh coloured bumps. It develops from a deeper blockage in the pore. No drainage path and oil accumulates in the skin. Oil, dead skin cells and bacteria trapped and blocked.
Inflammatory Acne
Either type with plugged pores could develop further into swollen,tender inflammatory acne, pimples,nodules or deeper lumps.
This is visible, generally, on the skin surface.
Papules
They are small tender bumps usually pink or red with no head.
Pustules
They are small round bumps red at the base with white or yellow pus at the top. Hence sometimes refer to as zits or pimples.
Nodules
They are solid and large pimples, that can be deeply embedded in the skin and painful.
Cysts
They are large pus filled and painful. It can easily cause scars.
