Fish oil contains Omega 3 fatty Acids, which is a part of the Essential Fatty Acid family.
These Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) can be naturally
obtained from the tissue of oily fish in the human diet when ingested as a food source or
alternatively by supplements. However, the human body is unable to
produce the EFAs; EPA and DHA, both of which are very important for human health. An EFA deficiency could cause a multitude of health issues.
Omega 3 fatty acids cannot be produced by fish either, nevertheless, the tissue of oily fish is able to accumulate the fatty acid by consuming microalgae or consuming pelagic fish, which is preyed on by larger fish or predators for food.
This type of EFA can be consumed by eating fish like anchovy, bluefish, herring, mackerel, menhaden, mullet, sardines, sturgeon, salmon, tuna and trout or by taking Capsules.
To prevent spoilage the supplements may contain small amounts of vitamin E and combined with iron, calcium or vitamins A, B3, B2, B1, C, or D.

Most of the health benefits can be attributed to the presence of Omega 3 essential fatty acids - Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).
The health benefits include its ability to enhance a healthy heart; reduced cardiovascular disease, lower the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) which is the bad cholesterol and increase the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) which is the good cholesterol, lower excess triglyceride levels, boost the immune system, help improve eye disorder, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and ulcers.
Its use may help with anxiety, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), depression and Alzheimer's disease. It also potentially may help in weight loss, pregnancy, fertility and skin care.
As a result of the anti-inflammatory properties it is able to prevent, treat or soothe rashes, psoriasis, eczema and acne. However, it is always wise to consult an aesthetician, skin care specialist or dermatologist.
Concerns have been made about toxic pollution and contamination, as a result of which fish from polluted waters may have its fat polluted. Therefore, such pollutants like brominated flame retardants, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, dioxins, mercury and lead may end up in human diet. However, the International Fish Oil Standard program is a third party testing and accreditation program that ensures omega 3 fish oil products meet the strict requirements of fish quality and purity.
